Hello sewers!
Autumn 🍂 has crept in and the cool, crisp weather has got me craving warm and stylish projects. Has anyone else taken note of the A/W tartan midi dress trend? I am totally in love, here’s some of the inspiration that has made me want to dash to the sewing machine and sew a colourful midi dress.
The only burning question was which tartan? I shopped around online and couldn’t find a tartan that wasn’t old fashioned, garish and dress weight, as opposed to a suiting weight. I was browsing Instagram when I found Sew Much Moor, also located in Devon.

I asked for some samples to test how soft the fabric would feel and whether my skin would love it as much as I did the colour. Happily the fabric was so soft and all I needed to do was choose a pattern. I was inspired by the River Island and Oasis high street tartan midi dresses, I love the tiered skirts and gathered sleeve details.

My sewing pattern choice is well known in the home sewing community, it is Tilly and the Buttons popup at Indigo dress. Pictured below 👇 as made by the wonderful Button & Pip. The hacks I will make are to add some gather to the sleeve and a long sleeve to mirror the ready to wear styles above.

I can’t wait to make this project, my vision is styling it with a vegan leather biker jacket and boots, perfect for shopping with friends 🛍
Thanks for reading, let me know what you’ll be sewing this autumn in the comments below.

I’ve got a red tartan and I can’t decide what to do with it. So I save it until I’m inspired! I’m looking forward to seeing your progress!
